What Are Moissanite and Diamonds?
Although moissanite and diamonds share a similar appearance, they are entirely different gemstones.
A diamond is composed of pure carbon atoms arranged in an incredibly strong crystal structure. Natural diamonds form deep beneath the Earth's surface over billions of years under immense pressure and heat. Today, diamonds are also created in laboratories using advanced technology that replicates these natural growing conditions, producing gemstones that are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds.
Moissanite, on the other hand, is made from silicon carbide. It was first discovered in 1893 by French chemist Henri Moissan within fragments of a meteor crater. Because naturally occurring moissanite is exceptionally rare, virtually all moissanite used in jewellery today is laboratory created.
Although both gemstones are grown in controlled environments today, their chemical structures remain completely different.
