How To: Confidently Find Your Partner’s Ring Size
A surprise proposal is one of life’s most unforgettable moments, deserving careful thought all the way down to your partner’s ring size. An accurately sized ring ensures both comfort and aesthetics, meaning it can be worn effortlessly from the very first moment.
At TMC Fine Jewellers, we understand the delicate balance between secrecy and precision. The following guide is designed to help you determine your partner’s ring size with confidence.
What is a perfect fit?
An engagement ring should slide on smoothly, sit comfortably against the finger, and offer subtle resistance when passing over the knuckle. This ensures the ring feels secure without being too tight or at risk of slipping off. While this serves as our recommended guide, the perfect fit ultimately depends on the individual, as some people prefer a slightly snugger fit, while others a slightly looser feel.
Using a Complimentary Ring Sizing Kit
One of the most accurate ways to determine a ring size at home is by using a complimentary sizing tool. This tool provide everything needed to measure the finger in the privacy of your own home. It is essential to measure the left ring finger, as this is the traditional finger for engagement rings, and the dominant hand is often slightly larger. For accuracy, the ring sizer should be placed on the finger while your partner is relaxed (or if it is a surprise, perhaps while they are asleep or otherwise unaware). Secure yours.

Finding Clues from Existing Rings
If your partner already wears rings, a subtle method is to examine the inside of one for size markings. Many rings have hallmarks stamped inside that indicate the size, which can then be translated into the correct engagement ring size. Another discreet approach is to borrow a ring your partner already wears and bring it to a jeweller for professional sizing, or measure the inner diameter at home using a ruler or a photograph. While these methods are not perfectly precise on their own, the guidance of one of our team members ensures a close approximation. As ring size differs from finger to finger, and hand to hand, if you know which finger your partner usually wears the ring on, it is always helpful information in providing a more accurate guess.
We work with standard Australian ring sizing. If needed, to convert your ring size, refer to our international sizing chart so you choose the right ring size.
Seeking Help from a Close Companion
Sometimes, the best insights come from those who know your partner well. A trusted friend or family member may already know their ring size or can help you measure it under the guise of a casual outing. If this is not an option, it is possible to ask in a playful or indirect way. Suggesting to pick out a ring “just for fun” together, perhaps for a friend or family member, can provide the information you need without raising any suspicion.
Remembering Natural Size Fluctuations
It is important to remember that fingers can naturally fluctuate in size due to temperature, weather and daily activities. Even with careful measuring, minor adjustments may be necessary. We recommend wearing the ring for a short period before resizing to ensure it feels comfortable and secure.
If your ring is not the correct size, we provide one complimentary resize, within the first 6 months of your purchase, inclusive of 2 sizes up and 2 sizes down. Simply secure a ring drop-off appointment, or get in touch with our friendly team so we can support you on your journey.
