Your Guide to Understanding Ring Allergies
From subtle irritation to persistent sensitivity, how your skin reacts to jewellery is never something to ignore. Whilst true allergies are relatively rare, sensitivities are experienced far more often.
Every piece at TMC Fine Jewellers is crafted to the highest quality and is completely skin-friendly, yet understanding the causes of sensitivities remains invaluable knowledge when co-creating your heirloom piece. Factors such as alloyed metals, skin chemistry, and daily wear can all play a role. By learning what to look for, you can approach the design of your everyday jewellery with confidence, knowing your choices are informed, intentional, and your heirloom piece is crafted for a lifetime.
What causes ring allergies?
Most ring “allergies” are a form of allergic contact dermatitis, a skin reaction triggered when certain metals come into contact with the skin. For many people, the reaction develops gradually. What once felt comfortable can suddenly become irritating, particularly with prolonged or daily wear.
What is important to know, is that these reactions are almost always related to alloys and trace metals, such as nickel, which are commonly found in cheaper or mass-produced jewellery. Nickel is widely used in alloys for strength and durability, but it is also one of the leading causes of metal allergies worldwide.
However, even with quality metals, individual factors like the pH of your skin or the lotions and creams you use can influence reactions. That’s why, when designing your dream ring, it’s essential to know exactly what metals and alloys are being used, ensuring your piece truly lasts a lifetime.
Signs your jewellery may be causing a reaction
Reactions can vary in severity but often appear where jewellery sits directly on the skin. You may notice redness, irritation, itching, dry or cracked skin, or small blisters and swelling. These symptoms can appear within hours or even days after contact and may persist with continued wear. Rings in particular can intensify reactions, as moisture, soap, and friction become trapped against the skin throughout the day.

Why metal composition matters
Not all jewellery is upheld to the same standards of quality. Even pieces marketed as gold or silver may contain alloyed metals that can trigger sensitivities. Lower-karat gold, for example, contains a higher percentage of alloy metals to increase durability, which can include nickel or other reactive elements. Similarly, plated jewellery can wear down over time, exposing the base metal beneath, often where irritation begins.
Higher-purity metals, on the other hand, significantly reduce this risk. At TMC, we are committed to working with only the most exceptional materials, sourced from ethical origins. We work with Australian gold and precious metal suppliers with over 70 years of industry experience, and the way we select and handle them is certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council. Our pieces also only use premium alloys such as palladium, which are far less reactive on the skin. Learn more about our precious metals.
Choosing jewellery your skin will love
When designing pieces for everyday wear, transparency about materials is key. Solid, high-quality precious metals and nickel-free or hypoallergenic alloys, all help minimise the risk of sensitivity. If you have experienced reactions before, opting for higher-purity metals such as 14k or 18k gold, or platinum, is often the safest approach.
