The Difference Between White Gold and Platinum
At TMC Fine Jewellers, we primarily work with responsibly sourced Australian 18 karat gold, 14 karat gold and platinum (PT950).
For those dreaming of a white toned precious metal for your engagement ring, both white gold and platinum both offer a beautiful, bright lustre. Often mistaken for one another due to their uncanny visual resemblance, understanding the difference between these metal types will guide you in making the perfect choice for your heirloom piece, with quiet confidence.
So, what is the difference between white gold and platinum? Which should you choose for your engagement ring?
White Gold
Gold is graded in karats (not to be confused with carats), which is a unit measuring the percentage of pure gold in your jewellery. Pure Gold comprises 24 karats, which is far too soft to utilise in bridal jewellery, so it is alloyed with other metals to provide strength and durability, as well as to achieve varying colour hues. At TMC Fine Jewellers, we offer gold in 2 different grades: 18K and 14K.
Just like their yellow and rose gold counterparts, 14 karat white gold contains 58.5% pure gold and 41.5% alloy and 18 karat contains 75% pure gold and 25% alloy. Both 14 karat and 18 karat white gold look identical in appearance, as they are plated in rhodium.
White gold isn't naturally occurring, it is created through combining pure gold which is naturally yellow and alloys to create its white appearance. All of our white gold contains premium alloys including palladium, as well as other base alloys and is plated in rhodium to achieve its lustrous and bright finish.
Rhodium plating adds the white bright finish of white gold jewellery by applying a thin rhodium layer. The jewellery is cleaned, dipped in a rhodium solution, and electrically treated, resulting in a brilliant white finish that resists scratches and tarnish, ensuring long-lasting lustre. White gold requires re-rhodium plating at least once per year to maintain its beautiful finish. Whilst this is not included in the complimentary service, it can be added upon request and is recommended if your ring is white gold. White gold is also a more affordable option when compared to platinum, with a setting price for The Luise Ring - Oval Solitaire beginning at $1,080.00 AUD.
Platinum
Platinum is a naturally white metal, is denser and a more durable metal compared to its white gold counterparts. Its strength and durability also mean that a platinum ring will retain its shape and form for many years to come without losing any of its precious metal thickness over time. It also is highly scratch-resistant, which makes it an excellent choice for men who lead an active lifestyle or work with their hands.
At TMC Fine Jewellers, our platinum is very pure, comprising of 95% pure platinum and 5% alloy. However, whilst it is an incredibly durable metal, it is actually more susceptible to denting, and should be regularly polished and cleaned professionally to maintain its smooth appearance. Unlike white gold, platinum doesn't require rhodium plating to maintain its pristine, lustrous appearance.
It has a slightly more grey hue than white gold, and is more expensive in cost, with a setting price for The Luise Ring - Oval Solitaire beginning at $1,480.00 AUD.
